New Zealand: Kōwhai Park solar farm breaks ground
We’re pleased to share that our Kōwhai Park solar farm in Christchurch, New Zealand, has officially broken ground following the project’s successful financial close. This milestone was marked with a sod-turning event on Tuesday 27 August, bringing together key figures from the energy sector and the local community to celebrate a significant step forward in the region’s renewable energy journey.
The event began with a karakia – a traditional Māori prayer – led by Maaka Tau from Ngāi Tūāhuriri. It acknowledged the world and taiao (environment) and recognised the importance of the mahi (work) ahead of us.
In a series of speeches, leaders underscored the importance of the Kōwhai Park solar farm in advancing New Zealand’s renewable energy goals. Mike Fuge, CEO of Contact Energy, highlighted how this project contributes to the country’s clean energy transition. New Zealand Minister for Energy Hon Simeon Brown discussed the government’s commitment to supporting such initiatives, reinforcing New Zealand’s path toward a sustainable future. Justin Watson, CEO of Christchurch International Airport Limited, also emphasised the collaborative effort behind the project and its critical role in supporting the region’s energy needs.
Adam Pegg, Managing Director of APAC at Lightsource bp, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership at the event, saying: “We are excited to be part of New Zealand’s energy mix. Drawing from our global experience, we’re committed to delivering low-cost, reliable energy solutions for New Zealand. We’ve built strong partnerships with both Contact Energy and Christchurch Airport, and we’re proud to lead such an important and complex project for the region.”
The event was also attended by our engineering, procurement, and construction contractor Chintec, as well as other key stakeholders including Ventia, Orion, Airways, and city councillors, underscoring the broad support and collaboration behind the Kōwhai Park project.
This event was more than a ceremonial milestone – it was a celebration of progress, partnership, and a shared vision for a sustainable future. We look forward to providing further updates as the Kōwhai Park solar farm continues to progress.
