Lightsource bp begins construction on Trinidad and Tobago’s first utility-scale solar project

Lightsource bp, has marked the beginning of construction of Trinidad and Tobago’s first utility-scale solar project with a sod-turning ceremony at Brechin Castle.

The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, the Honourable Dr Keith Rowley, attended the ceremony, in company with Ministers of Energy and Energy Industries, and Public Utilities. The project owners also attended the ceremony, bp Alternative Energy Trinidad and Tobago (bpAETT) and Shell Renewables Caribbean (Shell), along with the project developer, Lightsource bp.

The 112MWac/148MWp solar project is being built across two sites – Brechin Castle and Orange Grove, and is expected to produce approximately 300,000MWh of green electricity per year, the equivalent to powering the equivalent of 42,500 Trinidadian homes.

Lightsource bp has led the negotiations and the development of the project, applying their development, engineering, finance and new market entry experience to realise Trinidad and Tobago’s large-scale solar ambitions. Lightsource bp will continue to oversee the construction process on behalf of bp and Shell, with Grupotec Servicios Avanzados S.A. and SDV West Indies selected as the main contractors.

The project represents the huge potential to accelerate the energy transition through collaboration and is a significant milestone for the future of Trinidad and Tobago moving towards a sustainable energy future. The partners look forward to energising this ground-breaking project.
