Powering NSG Group
In Spring 2019, Lightsource bp successfully completed and connected two solar installations, providing clean, renewable energy to world-leading glass manufacturer NSG Group’s European Technical Centre in Lathom, Lancashire.
The sites, totalling 2.29MWp, provide around 30% of the facility’s annual electricity demand, and are another success in our long-term goal of accelerating the low-carbon transmission.
We developed and funded the entire project, with no capital investment required from NSG Group and no disruption to their daily operations. NSG Group buys the clean, renewable electricity from us, via a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), which provides them with a fixed, index-linked rate designed to hedge against price hikes and fluctuations, and deliver consistent operational savings over the 25-year contract period. As well as reducing electricity costs, the solar installation is a crucial part of NSG Group’s drive to improve their sustainability credentials, and helps them to meet carbon reduction targets by saving an estimated 848 tonnes of carbon emissions each year – the equivalent of taking 180 family cars off the road.
Alongside the financial and environmental benefits of the project, the installations showcase one of NSG Group’s own products. The research and development for the glass contained within the solar modules was conducted at the European Technical Centre itself, where operations will now be powered by their own hard work.
